“A Beautiful Experience: The Midwest Grotto Tradition” takes its name from the brochures and memorabilia of Wisconsin’s Dickeyville Grotto, one of several sites that inspired pilgrimage, reflection, and community gathering since the 1910s. Now open at the?John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the exhibition explores the lasting influence of these midwestern landmarks on artists and visitors alike. The exhibition marks the first public presentation of Madeline Buol’s 13-piece grotto, which the?Kohler Foundation, Inc.?saved from her yard in 2011 and gifted to the Arts Center. One of the few known women grotto builders, Buol combined shells, stones, and figurines collected during her travels. Alongside Buol’s work, contemporary artists?Stephanie Shih?and E. Saffronia?Downing?respond to the grotto tradition through explorations of material, immigration histories, and the inventive construction techniques of grotto makers.
