关于我们

The Ellis Island Honors Society awards the Ellis Island Medals of Honor annually on Ellis Island. Nominations are now open. A criteria and digital nomination form is available on our website. The next ceremony will take place May 13, 2023 The Ellis Island Medals of Honor embody the spirit of America in their celebration of patriotism, tolerance, brotherhood and diversity. We recognize individuals who have made it their mission to share with those less fortunate their wealth of knowledge, indomitable courage, boundless compassion, unique talents and selfless generosity; all while maintaining the traditions of their ethnic heritage as they uphold the ideals and spirit of America. As always, we remain dedicated to the maintenance and restoration of America’s greatest symbol of its immigrant history, Ellis Island. Since the Medal was founded in 1986, we have honored such distinguished and diverse Americans including: six Presidents of the United States; Vice-President Joe Biden, Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the Hon. Hillary Clinton, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Mia Farrow, Rosa Parks, Nobel Prize laureates Elie Wiesel and Bert Sakmann, as well as Lee Iacocca, just to name a few. A complete list of former Medalists can be found on our website www.EIHonors.org.

  • Charlie was more than a towering figure in American politics — he was a man of principle, heart, and unwavering dedication to the people he served. Over the decades of our friendship, I came to know Charlie not only as a leader but as a loyal friend, a source of wisdom, and a man whose laughter could brighten any room. His compassion, courage, and commitment to justice left an indelible mark on this nation and on all of us who were fortunate enough to know him personally. I will miss him terribly. In 2016, I had the privilege of sitting down with Charlie for a conversation that captured the spirit of his remarkable life and career. It remains one of my most cherished memories. I encourage you all to take a moment to watch this video and reflect on the legacy of a truly extraordinary man. Rest in peace, my friend. You will never be forgotten.

  • Today, we honor Juneteenth — a powerful reminder of freedom long delayed, but never denied. As we reflect on the resilience, courage, and enduring contributions of Black Americans, we also celebrate those who’ve been recognized with the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor — an award celebrating those who exemplify the values of community, heritage, and human dignity. Legends like Rosa Parks, Muhammad Ali, Whoopi Goldberg, and John Amos have each received this honor, standing alongside countless others whose voices and actions have shaped our nation’s story. Today, we remember their legacies and the countless unnamed heroes whose sacrifices made freedom possible — and we recommit ourselves to justice, equity, and unity. Chairman Of The Board at Ellis Island Honors Society

It is with a heavy heart that I reflect on the passing of my dear friend, Congressman Charlie Rangel. Today, I had the honor of attending his funeral at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City — a beautiful yet somber gathering to celebrate a truly remarkable life. Charlie was more than a public servant; he was a man of immense character, warmth, and conviction. For over 30 years, I had the privilege of working alongside him on the Board of Directors of the Ellis Island Honors Society, where his unwavering commitment to honoring the immigrant spirit and advocating for dignity and opportunity for all never faltered. His friendship meant the world to me, and his absence leaves a void that words can scarcely describe. The service was a fitting tribute to his life and legacy. I was deeply moved by the heartfelt eulogies delivered by President Bill Clinton and Senator Chuck Schumer — both Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipients themselves — who spoke with great affection and respect for Charlie’s enduring impact on our nation and the countless lives he touched. As we laid Charlie to rest, I was reminded of the importance of kindness, courage, and speaking up for those who cannot. His example will continue to guide me, and I will always treasure the memories of our friendship and his boundless spirit. Rest peacefully, my friend. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

  • Today we remember one of the most courageous days in history — the 81th Anniversary of D-Day. On June 6, 1944, over 156,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, launching the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever seen. They fought with courage, unity, and unshakable resolve to free Europe from tyranny and oppression. Thousands gave their lives that day so that freedom could prevail. Their bravery turned the tide of World War II and shaped the future of the free world. On this day, we honor their sacrifice, remember their valor, and give thanks for the liberties they fought to protect. Lest we forget. #DDay81 #HonorTheirSacrifice #FreedomIsNotFree

  • This Memorial Day, we honor the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Their courage and selflessness remind us of the true cost of freedom. Earlier this month, at the 2025 Ellis Island Medals of Honor gala, we were privileged to host The Victory Belles from the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. Their moving performance was a heartfelt tribute to our fallen service members and a celebration of the enduring spirit of our military. As we reflect today, let us remember with gratitude—and commit to honoring their legacy through service, unity, and remembrance.
